Is Personal Care Right for Me?

Choosing the right level of care—for yourself or someone you love—is a big and often emotional decision. Many families find themselves asking: Is personal care the right fit, or is it too much… or not enough?

At Evergreen Homestead, we believe the right setting should feel safe, respectful, and truly like home. This guide is designed to help you decide whether personal care—and specifically Evergreen Homestead—may be the right next step.

What Is a Personal Care Home?

Our personal care home is a small, residential, home-like setting where adults receive help with daily activities while maintaining as much independence as possible. It is not a nursing home and not independent living.

In Pennsylvania, personal care homes support individuals who need assistance with daily living, but do not require continuous medical or skilled nursing care.

At Evergreen Homestead, we are an 8-resident personal care home designed to feel like a real home—not a facility. Our focus is on dignity, routine, companionship, and personalized support.

Personal Care at Evergreen Homestead May Be Right If You or Your Loved One:

Personal care is often a good fit when someone:

  • Needs help with bathing, dressing, grooming, or toileting

  • Benefits from medication reminders or assistance

  • Has difficulty preparing meals or remembering to eat regularly

  • Feels lonely, isolated, or overwhelmed living alone

  • Has experienced recent falls or increased safety concerns

  • Needs gentle support with memory, organization, or daily routines

  • Wants companionship and structure while maintaining independence

Many residents and families don’t realize how stressful daily life had become—until that stress was lifted. Let us help lift that stress.

Who Personal Care at Evergreen Homestead Is Not Appropriate For

Just as important as knowing who we can support is being clear about who requires a higher level of care than we can safely provide.

Evergreen Homestead is not the right fit for individuals who require:

  • Skilled nursing care or ongoing medical monitoring

  • Complex or advanced wound care (such as stage 3 or 4 pressure injuries)

  • IV therapy, injections, or other medical treatments requiring licensed nursing staff

  • Advanced or late-stage dementia with unsafe wandering or severe behavioral symptoms

  • Frequent medical interventions, hospitalizations, or unstable health conditions

  • One-on-one staffing at all times

  • Behavioral challenges that pose a risk to themselves or others

If someone’s needs exceed what personal care can provide, we believe the most compassionate choice is helping families explore a setting that can safely meet those needs.

Personal Care vs. a Nursing Home: Understanding the Difference

Personal Care at Evergreen Homestead:

  • Focus on daily living support, not medical treatment

  • Offer a smaller, peaceful, more personal environment

  • Encourage independence with support as needed

  • Feel like a home—not an institution

Nursing homes are more appropriate for individuals with complex medical needs requiring regular nursing oversight, constant supervision, and mechanical lifts for transfers.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Personal Care

Families often begin exploring personal care after noticing:

  • Missed medications or confusion about doses

  • Weight loss, poor nutrition, or skipped meals

  • Difficulty managing housekeeping or laundry

  • Increased anxiety, especially in the evenings

  • Safety concerns, such as leaving appliances on or doors unlocked

  • Caregiver stress, burnout, or exhaustion

Needing support is not a failure—it’s a thoughtful step toward safety and quality of life. Exploring personal care early helps prevent difficult, last-minute decisions during a crisis.

What Life at Evergreen Homestead Looks Like

Daily life at Evergreen Homestead includes:

  • Home-cooked meals shared together; no more worrying about getting groceries or if Mom ate today

  • Worry-free living; forget about having to take care of the yard or shoveling the snow. No more utility bills or home maintenance

  • Conversation, laughter, and meaningful companionship and activities

  • Gentle routines that bring comfort and predictability

  • Housekeeping and laundry services - no more worrying about dusting and folding laundry!

  • Care provided by staff who truly know each resident as a person

Our goal is simple: to create a place where residents feel safe, valued, and at home.

Questions to Help You Decide

If you’re unsure, consider these questions:

  • Is living independently still safe right now?

  • Is daily life becoming more stressful than enjoyable?

  • Would some support allow for a better quality of life?

  • Would companionship and routine bring comfort or peace of mind?

There is no such thing as deciding “too early”—planning ahead gives you more options and less stress!

Next Steps

You don’t have to make this decision alone or all at once.

A conversation, tour, or simple question can provide clarity—even if a move is not immediate. At Evergreen Homestead, we are always happy to talk honestly about fit, timing, and next steps.

If personal care offers safety, connection, and relief—for both residents and families—it may be exactly the right place to call home.
